I hope you can help me out for my thesis. thank you|||biggest = pesticide and herbicide use on greens - daily golfers have higer cancer rates - and runn off.|||Every day when I walk through the woods next to the golf course, I see the drainage needed to keep the fairways dry, and I see the irrigation systems needed to keep the fairways wet, then I notice the many drain pipes leading into the woods and to the creeks and then to the rivers, containing the many chemicals used to keep the fairways and greens in pristine condition.
Fairways and greens are not "natural" in the sense that they look that good every day of the year. You have to do a lot of watering and chemical manipulation of the grass to maintain that condition. Its everyone downstream who has to eat and drink the products of the runoff.|||A golf course uses a lot of chemicals to keep the weeds out and keep the grass green and lush. They use a lot of gasoline powered machines to cut and trim. They also use a lot of water which in some areas has to come a long distance. But I bet they are still there.

Socially we are pretty mixed. We still have work to do - but then what nation doesn't? There is no nation which doesn't have poverty or homelessness etc.
Some stuff we do well, or at least we try and do ok at, we have "universal health", it's not perfect and Nordic countries do it better, but we do better than the US where homeless are regularly barely treated and then dumped at the local shelter when they can't buy. And something like 1/3 have no health insurance and are expected to pay hundreds of dollars for basic stuff (Morgan Spurlock did a 30 days on minimum wage and spent something like $500 to have his sprained ankle strapped in an emergency department. In Australia, go to a public hospital and it's free.) A documentary on a long term hospital saw bed sheets changed once a month and too bad if anything happens, cockroaches infested the sheets, good luck getting fed!
We have a fairly low bomicide rates - something like 1.25 per 100,000 (the US is between 5 and 6 per 100,000), our living standards, length of life etc are all pretty good...|||"Why are Australians...?"

What are the environmental problems related to radioactivity ?
Harm, effects and possible solutions|||the main problems with radioactive pollutants is their toxicity and long half-life. many pollutants released into the environment are short-lived - after a few minutes, hours, weeks or even months they will likely have been involved in a reaction that renders them inert or harmless. radioactive elements, on the other hand, do not decay into less-harmful substances for millions, often billions of years. so once they are released they are in the environment pretty much for good, and it is difficul t to collect them.
radioactive elements like uranium, thorium, plutonium etc are heavy metals - and heavy metals, for whatever reason, have a tendency to sequester in biological organisms. so, bacteria and plankton take some in, and fish that feed on them take in all of THEIR heavy metal content, and the birds that feed on the fish take in all of THEIR content.. and so on, all the way up the food chain. by the time you get to the top of the food chain, the large animals at the top (like humans!) take in a very heavy concentration of these contaminants.
having radioactive matter inside your body is a very, very bad thing. most radioactive elements decay by a process called "alpha emission" where they spontaneously decay by emitting an alpha particle. alphas are dangerous in a subtle way - they are weak enough that they don't travel very far in air - so standing next to an alpha emitter is not very dangerous. however, when the emitter is inside your body, the alphas don't have to travel very far to do damage to your cells! so having some alpha-emitting radioactive elements inside your body is far, far more hazardous than standing next to a million times as many atoms.

radioactive elements like uranium, thorium, plutonium etc are heavy metals - and heavy metals, for whatever reason, have a tendency to sequester in biological organisms. so, bacteria and plankton take some in, and fish that feed on them take in all of THEIR heavy metal content, and the birds that feed on the fish take in all of THEIR content.. and so on, all the way up the food chain. by the time you get to the top of the food chain, the large animals at the top (like humans!) take in a very heavy concentration of these contaminants.

How can science help us understand and solve environmental problems?
Science is the process of generating and testing hypothesis. It's a process of discovery not a process of knowledge. In this respect it's the very antithesis of faith as it assumes that truth will survive all tests and those may and should be questioned as often as possible while faith presumes that faith is sufficient, that questions only insult the belief. In science, truth does not need your faith and indeed your skepticism serves truth better than faith. There are no scientific facts, laws or knowledge; there's only the scientific process. Unfortunately, as the concept of all tests is an infinite quantity, science can never be complete and until it is, it is subject to bias, manipulation and misrepresentation.|||Science is the basis of everything we develop or understand. Without science we may be fooled by the things happening around us. In environment problems if we don't depend on science you will find that the most eloquent speaker can convince the whole world that nothing is wrong. Like the 'deniers' who are bent on slewing all the available data to prove that there is not environmental problem like green house effect or the ozone layer issues etc. Yes of course science also is stammering in this issue since the variables are so many, we are yet to conclusively say what is happening around us.

Do you think it truly is better for everyone to do small things such as recycling, driving less and walking more, turning off water and electricity when not in use, etc. or for a few people to totally change their lives in an effort to protect the environment?|||It's better to have more people do little things than a few do a lot of things. The impact is greater and the overall morale on the issue is healthier.
You can go to greater support if you already havea a large percent of the population doing little things, and it's more likely to get less expensive to those little things, which further encourages.
