Is hemp the answer to our environmental problems?

It can be used for paper, and gas. Plus, it does not require pesticides. Is it the answer?|||Marijuana is a pejorative term for a strain of cannabis with a high THC level. Other strains of Cannabis with low THC levels and no psychotropic qualities are called Hemp. In the 30's Hearst intentionally confused the two in a smear campaign against a plant. He had a newspaper empire that was not doing so well at the time but the family fortune was in forestry... to make paper. The ratio is about 1 acre of hemp makes the same amount of paper as 4 acres of timber. Dupont and Standard oil may have joined into the plan to outlaw commercial hemp along with the recreational variety.

It was outlawed just after a new machine was able to strip the fibre from the plant in quantities that would make paper from hemp more competitive than wood. At the time, no one was concerned with deforestation or global warming.

The ban was enacted in 1937 but repealed during WWII because hemp fibre was so important to the war effort and then reinstated after the war. The US government spends 80% of is allocation to destroy the commercial hemp among the smaller amount of marijuana. Some would call that a waste of money and resources.

Unfortunately the legalization of hemp has been effectively associated with the legalization of marijuana and it is difficult to separate the two. What politician is going to stick their neck out and call for the legalization of the commercial product when critics will once again confuse the issue and brand them "soft on drugs..." I may not be alone in expressing some doubt in the public ability to discern the difference. Just look at some of the answers here.

The environment does not need saving. It will continue to exist long after we are gone. But since a healthy environment prolongs a healthy quality of life for humans it may be in our self interest to consider it more carefully. Hemp is probably a technological and economic solution but it is not presently a political one. This is a different problem in itself.|||Save the World (Save the Humans) by joining TheHempNetwork: http://www.thehempnetwork.com/100555

|||It could be PART of the answer -- there isn't going to be one "magic bullet" that fixes the environment any more than a single event or issue caused the problems we have now. It's going to take a multi-pronged, multi-faceted, intensive and far-reaching set of solutions to fix things. It's going to require conservation in conjunction with better means of production.

By the way, industrial hemp doesn't have enough THC for anyone to get a buzz from.|||Hemp is the strongest vegetable fiber on the planet. Hemp is a highly evolved plant species and is not genetically engineered. Hemp is heat, mildew, pest, light, and rot resistant. Hemp's long, smooth, hollow fibers make hemp very strong, durable and mold and mildew resistant.
