The point about oil spills is a little erroneous, crude oil if spilt will start to evaporate quite quickly and as crude is what occurs in nature, there are no real long term effects of a spill, think Milford Haven in 1996, a spill occurred in February, the beaches etc were open for tourists in the summer of that year. Oil is a natural product and eventually most of it will have been broken down by micro-organisms in the water.
