I need this info for a project I'm doing and could you please give me the url where you found the info? Thanks!|||I lived in Sitka from 1991 to 1995. Spent those years in helicopters all over the area. Sitka is isolated - no road or train access. Only way there is by ferry or plane.
What sort of enviromental problems are you expecting? The entire area is a boreal rain forest, lots of moss and muskeg, mostly old growth trees from the ground to a man's height due to all the rain. It rains so much - the roof of my house had moss growing, and, moss started to grow on my truck!
Only interesting aspect of the area are the large amount of brown bears. They do not get as big as Kodiak brown bears, but, what they lack in size they make up in quantity. On any given dusk or dawn in the spring time - you can easily find a dozen bears walking the beach starting just a few hundred yards from where the town road stops..... usually spaced about a mile or two from each other. They like their space.
Sitka is loaded with fish year round. You could tie a string to a standard black pocket comb and jig it around on the bottom - something will try to eat it in a minute. In the spring there are so many herring spawning it turns the water a milk color.
Hope this helps
